The run is the horizontal distance from the outside wall to the ridge; the rise is the height gained over it. Any unit works if both use the same.
How it is calculated
Angle = arctan(rise ÷ run). Slope = rise ÷ run × 100. x:12 = 12 × rise ÷ run. Rafter = √(rise² + run²).
